Tattoo Removal New York

Tattoo removal in New York has taken on a new shape, thanks to the dedicated doctors at The Skin Institute of New York.

Getting a tattoo can be a very exciting time for some, and if the time should arise, getting it removed can be just as challenging. Find out how laser surgery, treatments, and the procedure itself can benefit you.

Removal Process

Laser tattoo removal works by producing short pulses of intense light that pass safely through the top layers of the skin to be selectively absorbed by the tattoo pigment. This laser energy causes the tattoo pigment to fragment into smaller particles that are then removed by your body's own immune system.

Tattoo removal methods have existed just as long as the actual tattooing process itself. Early attempts to remove tattoos have had less than desirable results. The use of skin grafting, plastic surgery, dermabrasion, microdermabrasion and less precise lasers are painful and expensive and have been known to leave behind scars in place of the tattoo.

There are three different types of laser that have been specifically developed for tattoo removal. They all use a technique known as Q-switching, which refers to the laser's short, high-energy pulses:

  • the Q-switched Ruby.
  • the Q-switched Alexandrite.
  • the Q-switched Nd: YAG.

The Nd: YAG is the most up-to-date system of laser for tattoo removal and is particularly advanced in the removal of red, blue and black inks. It is also the most widely available.
