Mohs Surgery New York

Mohs surgery is an advanced treatment process for skin cancer that offers the highest possible success rate for many skin cancers and simultaneously minimizes the sacrifice of normal tissue.

This cutting-edge treatment requires highly specialized physicians that serve as surgeon, pathologist and reconstructive surgeon. Currently, Mohs surgery is the most effective method of removing non-melatonin skin cancer.

Mohs surgery allows for the selective removal of the skin cancer with the preservation of as much of the surrounding normal tissue as possible.

The Mohs surgical process involves a repeated series of surgical excisions followed by a microscopic examination of the tissue to see if any tumor cells still remain.

Some tumors that appear small on clinical exams may have extensive invasion underneath normal appearing skin, resulting in a larger surgical defect than would be expected. It is therefore impossible to predict a final size until all surgery is completed.

This surgery is used to treat complex skin cancers; although roughly half of all treated tumors require 2 or more stages for complete excision.

Specialized training on behalf of your doctor is highly recommended for this treatment and should involve your surgeon being proficient in all aspects of the procedure. Including:

  • Anesthesia
  • Anatomy
  • Surgery
  • Pathology
  • Reconstruction

Knowledge of these and other aspects of the procedure and most importantly, surgical judgment, are usually not acquired during the course of residency training and often require additional specialized fellowship training.
